Task Force for AI in Education

Preparing students for an AI future

Convened by the Provost and Chief Academic Officer and the Chief AI and Data Science Officer, the task force will define responsible, human-centered AI uses of artificial intelligence at the University of Arizona.

Read the charge

AI is already part of how we teach and learn

Students use AI to study, gather information, draft documents and solve problems. Instructors use it to design lessons, teach classes and assess learning.

The task force starts from a central question: What do we owe our students? The answer holds two obligations. Students need an education that builds their capacity to think, question, create and work with others, and one that prepares them for a future being reshaped by AI. These goals can pull in different directions. The task force is committed to meeting both.

Depending on the course and its goals, AI may be something to teach with, something to teach about or something to teach without. The task force will provide the guidance to make these choices with care in every college and classroom, deciding what to adopt, what to redesign and what to protect.

The Charge

The provost and chief AI officer have asked the task force to produce two deliverables by April, 2027.

01. FOUNDATION

Principles for AI in Education

A short statement defining what responsible, human-centered AI in education means at the University of Arizona.

  • Protects students' cognitive, intellectual and social development
  • States what is distinctive about a U of A education
  • Guides decisions for individuals and units while preserving instructor latitude

02. NEXT STEPS

Action Plan

Recommendations for turning the principles into concrete, unified guidance for policy and practice. Acceptance of the plan authorizes the next stage of work.

The Action Plan will address

  • How to communicate the principles broadly
  • What should change in curriculum, program structure and assessment design
  • Which policies, documents and requirements need revision, enhancement or more visibility — including those governing academic integrity
  • How to keep the principles and recommended changes aligned with shared values
  • How to know goals are being met and how to evolve them as the landscape changes
  • What the work will require in people, time and investment
  • Where further work is needed — and where it belongs

A community-led process

The task force is grounded in mutual respect and focused on the university's core educational mission.

It will draw on research, best practices and existing university efforts, and seek input from faculty, students, staff and academic leaders across disciplines.
